Autumn camping season — a charcoal brazier inside a tent hits max carbon monoxide in 45 seconds
According to Maeil Shinmun (Oct. 5), in a 2024 National Fire Research Institute test, bringing a charcoal brazier into a four-person dome tent pushed carbon monoxide to the 500ppm measuring limit in 45 seconds, and a briquette brazier in the vestibule of a living-room tent pushed the inner tent to the same level in 180 seconds. Because CO is lighter than air, alarms should hang within 30cm of the tent ceiling, and a Korea Consumer Agency test found 13 of 15 camping gas-leak alarms (86.7%) underperformed. 41.7% of campsite fires over the past 11 years happened in October. Petroleum products rose 14.8%, adding 0.56 points to overall inflation, with diesel up 20.0%, kerosene 19.5%, gasoline 11.8% and international airfares 22.5%. Thanks to Chuseok discount support and good harvests, farm produce fell 4.0% (fruit −10.9%, apples −9.2%, napa cabbage −15.2%), but livestock rose 3.7%, seafood 4.5%, processed food 2.1% (bread 5.7%) and dining out 2.5%. The cost-of-living index rose 2.5%. Core inflation excluding food and energy was 2.8% — the highest in two years and nine months, since December 2023, once August's telecom-fee base effect is stripped out (iNews24). The government estimated September inflation would have been 3.5% without the fuel price cap (Newsway). Bank of Korea Deputy Governor Lee Ji-ho said that, accounting for the fading base effect, price growth has actually picked up somewhat and is expected to stay around 3% in October (Asia Economy, Oct. 4).

Onnuri gift vouchers overhauled for the first time in 18 years — 10% at traditional markets, 5% in Seoul-area alleys
The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced an overhaul of Onnuri gift certificates at the Oct. 1 economic ministers' meeting (Newspim, Oct. 1) — the first full revamp since they launched in 2009, 18 years ago. From next year the purchase discount on digital Onnuri certificates drops from 7% to 5%, but spending them at traditional markets returns 5% of the payment and at regional alley shops 3%, for total benefits of 10% and 8%. Alley shops in the capital region get no rebate, so the benefit there falls to 5%, 2 points less than now. From January, card-company points can be converted into digital Onnuri certificates, and foreigners will be able to pay by scanning merchant QR codes with their home payment apps. Onnuri certificates worth ₩3.95 trillion were used last year, 65% (₩2.6 trillion) at traditional markets. According to the Seoul Economic Daily (Oct. 4), after hearing from merchants, SME Minister Lee So-young said the proposed 5% purchase discount should be raised, so the rate could go up during the National Assembly's budget review.

Trend Korea 2027 keywords — Boredom Society, Human Edge, Taste Capital
'Trend Korea 2027' by Seoul National University professor emeritus Kim Nan-do and the Consumer Trend Analysis Center is out (Miraebook, list price ₩22,000). According to Hans Economy (Oct. 3), at the Sept. 30 launch press conference at the Korea Press Center, Kim presented next year's keywords: 'Boredom Society', 'Life ROI', 'Form-Factor Shift', 'Try-It Economy', 'Saving Humans', 'Vibe Working', 'Re:tention Strategy', 'Human Edge', 'Half Signal' and 'Taste Capital'. He said that in an era of shrinking population and slowing growth, holding on to existing customers through a 'Re:tention Strategy' matters more than winning new ones, and gave examples such as the 'Form-Factor Shift' — changing a product's form rather than its function, like broth tablets, solid shampoo and vitamin patches — and 'Human Edge', where the more polished AI output becomes, the more people's own experience and judgment set work apart.

Incheon Airport's best-selling duty-free item is Isaac Toast sauce
According to the Kyunghyang Shinmun (Oct 2), Isaac Toast's signature sauce reached No. 1 overall in best-selling products on 'Airstar Duty Free', Incheon International Airport Corporation's combined duty-free shopping platform. Bukangi — over 900,000 visitors · lantern complaints at night, and Busan files a trademark
Bukangi, a dusky shark that swam into the canal of Busan's North Port waterfront park on Sept. 18, has stayed in the canal for 17 days despite two attempts to guide it out (water cannons on Sept. 29, a net on Oct. 2). According to SBS (Oct. 5), it even slipped back over the blocking net, and cumulative visitors to the park have passed 900,000 — 72,000 on National Foundation Day and 69,000 the day after. Korea Economic TV (Oct. 5) reported that visitors shining lanterns and flashlights at night have forced the park to keep broadcasting warnings, and complaints from nearby residents are growing. According to Jeonmae (Oct. 2), five trademark applications for 'Bukangi' have been filed by individuals since Sept. 21, so Busan city will file its own in October. Global Economic (Oct. 4) reported that Busan's Dong District pushed a North Port shark character contest with ₩7 million in total prizes, and that the National Institute of Fisheries Science is watching the fact that no clear feeding has been observed.

Soyeon's 'I'll Quit' — an office-worker song tops a network music show
'I'll Quit (Narr. Kian84)' is the title track of i-dle member Soyeon's first full-length album 'An Awesome Life', released Sept. 7. Its theme of quitting your job and its lyrics struck a chord with office workers. According to MediaPen (Oct. 5), it hit No. 1 on the real-time and daily charts of Melon, Genie and Bugs, YouTube Music's weekly chart, FLO, VIBE and iChart for a perfect all-kill, and won No. 1 on Mnet's 'M Countdown' on Oct. 1 and SBS's 'Inkigayo' on Oct. 4. Top Star News (Sept. 30) noted the song climbed over time rather than peaking at release, spreading beyond office workers through university-festival sing-alongs and students rewriting it for exam season. It also appears on Namuwiki's September 2026 meme list.

Merit keyrings · Seokga Money — open runs, with foreigners in line too
The 'merit keyring', said to add one unit of Buddhist merit every time you press it, spread on social media. According to Jaekyung Ilbo (Oct. 1), Jogyesa temple sold the 500 it got around Sept. 17 within a day, and Bongeunsa put up a sold-out notice on Sept. 29. BTN Buddhist TV (Oct. 5) reports that Bongeunsa's 'moktak merit keyring' — a keyboard keycap topped with a tiny wooden temple block that makes a moktak sound when pressed — sold all 6,000 units restocked on Sept. 23 within seven hours, and people line up an hour before each sale. It started with the 'Buddhist-core' trend among people in their 20s and 30s and now draws grandparents in their 60s and 70s buying gifts and foreign visitors who come to temples after watching KPop Demon Hunters. Jaekyung Ilbo also noted the 'digital moktak' in the app Seokga Money, which lets you tap a temple block on your phone.

Per OhmyNews (Oct 3), Yeongju city in North Gyeongsang made a promo for its Punggi Ginseng Festival starring deputy mayor Eom Tae-hyun and about 60 senior officials. It parodies the GENER8ION-made video for Swedish rapper Yung Lean's 'STORM II', and passed 2M combined views on YouTube and Instagram between Sept 29 and 6pm on Oct 2. The ginseng festival runs Oct 3-11.

'Not the museum, the library' — the National Library of Korea's Reels take off
According to ZDNet Korea (Oct. 4), the National Library of Korea has been posting Instagram Reels since mid-September about constantly being mistaken for the National Museum of Korea — 'Gukjungbak' versus 'Gukjungdo'. A video stressing 'not the museum, the library' and one using the new director's photo caught on and spread through online communities on their own. Users said it's 'funny because it doesn't try too hard' and that it 'stays within bounds for a public-agency Reel'.

The Lamppost Gentleman and 'inoe-com' — now there's a 'Fire Extinguisher Gentleman' too
Vesper is a gentleman character with a lamppost where his face should be, appearing in the parade of Lotte World Adventure's 'Dark Fantasy Festival'. Lotte World created the character in-house, and he appears alongside candlestick-headed Kandra and others. According to HuffPost Korea, the Vesper video posted on Lotte World's X account on Sept. 16 had 15.8 million views as of Sept. 30, and on Sept. 28 the Jeonbuk 119 Safety Experience Center posted an Instagram video of a 'Fire Extinguisher Gentleman' — a figure in firefighter gear with a red extinguisher for a head — to promote how to use an extinguisher. According to Maeil Shinmun (Sept. 28), hundreds of pieces of fan art appeared on social media and Lotte World launched an official fan-art contest. The parade runs daily at 8:20 p.m. until Nov. 15.

AI 'B-grade romance fantasy' — I Got Transported, but My Face Came Along
A romance-fantasy short drama made with generative AI by YouTube channel Studio Steelcut. The premise: the heroine is transported into her favorite romance-fantasy novel, but keeps her real-world face. According to the Korea Economic Daily (Sept. 30), Episode 1 passed 1.54 million views and Episode 3 carried a paid ad, while mentions of AI short dramas rose from 94 in June to 565 in September. Gogumafarm (Sept. 30) noted that the trending approach doesn't hide AI's awkwardness but plays it for laughs alongside romance-fantasy clichés and B-movie sensibility.

AI-DOL's 'I WASH' — the girl group made to sell a washer
'I WASH' is the debut single of AI-DOL, a five-member group LG Electronics put together to promote its all-in-one AI WashCombo washer-dryer; each member stands for a product feature such as large capacity or AI time sensing. According to the Korea Economic Daily (Sept. 23), the song, first released on Instagram in August, hit No. 1 on Instagram's trending audio and the dance video reached No. 4 on the Reels chart; the group performed on Mnet on Sept. 17 and MBC on Sept. 19. IT Daily (Sept. 23) reports it went out on about 50 music platforms on Sept. 22, and from October it can be set as the wash-finished chime in LG's ThinQ app.

The AI one-word challenge and 'AI seized evidence' — “What flower am I?”
Per Yonhap (Sep 27), people in their 20s and 30s are asking generative AI “What flower am I?”, “What color am I?” or “What weather am I like?” — the AI answers with a single word (sunflower, yellow…) based on their chat history — and then cutting moody photos to match into roughly 15-second clips. This 'AI one-word definition challenge' is spreading on Instagram Reels and TikTok. On X, users are sharing 'AI seized evidence' images: the items police would supposedly find if they raided your home, generated from your past AI chats.

If I were an idol, I'd definitely take this part (sung by me)
The original is a post by X user @qri_0u0, who picked the parts they'd most want to sing in favorite idol songs and sang them. Fans began posting their own favorite parts under the same caption, and it spread to actor, musical-actor and character versions like 'If I were an actor, I'd definitely want this line.' Gogumafarm featured it first in its September meme roundup on Sept. 21 and revisited it in its Sept. 30 YouTube trends, explaining that fans of the same person each pick a different 'killing part', making it a format open to free variation.

"Take the L" — the Kwon Root challenge

'Jang Won-young ___' — and she answered
A meme where you put 'Jang Won-young' (IVE) in front of anything good as praise ('a Jang Won-young schedule', 'Jang Won-young Buldak'). It started in Tamagotchi communities, where a beautifully raised pet was called a 'Wonyoung-gotchi', and settled in as the opposite of 'bamti' (tacky). BIBI explained it on JTBC's Please Take Care of My Refrigerator in August. On Sept 10 Jang Won-young replied herself on Bubble: 'don't eat a bamti meal, eat a Jang Won-young meal… have a Jang Won-young day', and Careet ran a meme roundup on Sept 16 titled 'Is Jang Won-young the opposite of bamti?'

Bamti · guilty bamti · bamti-ness
'Bamti' describes a person, thing or situation that looks subtly tacky or clumsy. It comes from a screenshot of a user named Bamti in the avatar game LINE Play who answered criticism of their looks with a flat 'OK'. Hankook Ilbo (March) and Kyunghyang Shinmun (May) covered it, and spin-offs have stuck: 'guilty bamti' (tacky but oddly appealing), 'bamti-nanda' (it looks bamti) and 'bamti-ryeok' (bamti power). In September it came back paired with its new opposite, 'Jang Won-young'.
